After a few years hiatus, Alpaga Ontario held their Spring Show at the Kawartha Downs in Peterborough last weekend. There was over 15 different farms present and more than 130 alpacas from all over Eastern Canada that participated in the event.
Alpaca shows, like the one held last weekend, allows us to see and appreciate what other breeders have produced and how their subjects are maturing. It is also a great opportunity to have our own alpacas evaluated to see how our breeding program is coming along but above all, it is a fun yearly gathering for alpaca breeders that come together and talk all things "alpaca".
The show offered two types of judging format; one was the Halter evaluation and the other was the Walking Fleece evaluation. In the Halter format, alpacas are walked into a show ring and the judge evaluation is based on both conformation (physical) traits as well as fleece (fiber) traits. Each alpaca competes against other alpacas of the same age, sex and colour and are ranked by the judge according to the sum of positive traits observed.

In the Walking Fleece format, alpacas are walked into a seperate show ring where a different judge only assesses fleece traits. No evaluation is done on conformation traits in this judging format. In the Walking Fleece, females and males of the same age and colour compete together in the same class as opposed to being judged seperatly as they are in the Halter ring.
For this year's spring show in Ontario, we decided to travel with a smaller show crew of 6 alpacas. Even though we typically specialize in darker colours, we brought along 3 lighter subjects that ended up doing very well, even winning a Colour Championship as well as a Reserve Champion in the Light category!
To say we are delighted with our 2025 results would be an understatement! We are back from what was a very successful weekend for our farm and our little show crew, with some amazing results and a few surprise ribbons along the way!
Congratulations to all the farms that participated
and hopefully, it will be a rendez-vous again next year in Ontario!
